The architecture of Wan Chai captures its heritage – a rich mosaic of history and modernity. You will have a chance to experience the history of Hong Kong right at the doorstep of The Johnston Suites serviced apartments (囍寓). Many historical buildings are still in use today, their purpose and spirit retained for future generations.

Blue House/ Green House/ Yellow House

Tong Lau, the iconic tenement buildings, is an integral part of the traditional landscape of Wan Chai, among which the Blue House is a classic example. This four-storey Lingnan-style residential block from the 1920s features a mix of Chinese and Western aesthetics. Its distinctive blue colour was pure chance – when it was repainted in the ‘70s, the only paint the government workers had left was blue, so a blue house it became. A museum houses a replica of the period’s typical living quarters on the premises, and residents still occupy its apartments. Similar examples of this beautiful traditional architecture can be found in the Green House, a Grade II historic building also built in the 1920s and has now been transformed into the Comix Home Base, and the Yellow House, which features a beautiful rooftop embellished with Chinese roof tiles. They are the unique pieces of architecture in Hong Kong.
